Born in 1954, George Galloway has been the Respect Party MP for Bradford West since 2012. From 1983 to 1987 Galloway was the General Secretary of the anti-poverty charity War on Want, highlighting the needs of poverty-stricken areas around the world.
Galloway first became a Labour Party MP in the 1987 general election, where he represented Glasgow Hillhead, but was expelled from the party in 2003 for 'bringing the party into disrepute'.
He became a leading member of the Respect Party, a left-wing, socialist political party in 2004, becoming the Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow at the 2005 general election. In 2010 he contested the Poplar and Limehouse seat unsuccessfully, and returned as a Westminster MP at the Bradford West by-election in 2012.
