Should we be committed to giving parents free childcare?
Conservative "Our new Tax Free Childcare will [stop women feeling that they have to choose between their family and their career], giving parents up to £2,000 of support towards childcare costs, and making the return to work after having a child that little bit easier." Green Party "We would extend the hours of nursery/children’s centre entitlement for children aged 3 and 4, this and try to give parents and carers as much flexibility as possible in terms of times and locations. The provision of occasional ‘ad hoc’ care will be encouraged and facilitated." Source: Green Party Website, http://policy.greenparty.org.uk/sw.html
Labour Parents shouldn't face the prospect of taking a job that ends up costing them more than they’ll earn. We will give working parents 25 hours of free childcare for three and four-year-olds per week. Source: Labour Manifesto
Liberal Democrat The Liberal Democrats would aim to make 20 hours of free childcare a week available for all parents with children aged from 2 to 4, and all working parents from the end of paid maternity leave (9 months) to 2 years, by 2020. They would start by providing 15 hours a week of free childcare to the parents of all 2 year olds, paid for by cancelling the Conservative plan to introduce a marriage allowance into the tax system. Then prioritise 15 hours free childcare to all working parents with children aged between 9 months and 2 years. Source: Liberal Democrat pre-2015 Manifesto
Plaid Cymru "The other options outlined are to top up the existing ten hours Foundation Phase place offered to three and four year olds with twenty hours of free childcare, and to offer ten hours free childcare for three year olds on top of the existing ten hour Foundation Phase place and twenty hours free childcare for two year olds." SNP "For all there will be radical social protection, a huge increase in free childcare, helping parents return to work and giving their kids the best start in life."
